The protocols for Internet were developed by ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency Network), a company which worked on early packet switching networks in 1970s which made it possible to join multiple networks. File sharing on the Internet was made possible in 1989 at McGill University due to an accident that closed their FTP server. Before that, sharing was only possible in point-to-point communications. It wasnââ¬â¢t available for a wide area network. Commercial ISPs (Internet service providers) emerged in the 1980s where the common man could now enjoy the advantages of being online. For the first time, the Internet was provided by the US government in some of the states. In 1995, the remaining restrictions were removed and the Internet was made widely available to the public. ââ¬Å"Internetâ⬠is short for Internet Transmission Control. The term was somewhat abbreviated in 1974. In 1982, the name Internet was made official. à The term ââ¬Å"surfingâ⬠came about in 1992 in New York by a lady who was new to the Internet. à According to various scientific schools of thought, telegraph machines are said to be the inspiration behind the Internet. But largely, it is accredited to a man named Leonard Kleinrock who wrote a paper called ââ¬Å"Information Flow in Large Communication Netsâ⬠. à The Internet time is being maintained or tracked by a digital clock that was created in Colorado, which is so accurate that it will reportedly not make an error in 20 million years. This clock is responsible for maintaining Internet time. à Electronic emails came into being in 1972, and were ââ¬Ëinventedââ¬â¢ by Ray Tomlinson, a scientist from the University of Cambridge. This sophisticated invention introduced the difference between sender and receiver and could identify email addresses. Queen Elizabeth sent her first email in 1976, the first ever state leader to use the Internet for communication purposes. Around 3.2 billion people browse the web (worldwide), with Asians making the largest chunk totaling 1.7 billion users, which makes it around 45% of the total population. The Internet has also reached third world countries, and around 30% of the population in third world countries has Internet access. However, a good Internet connection is yet to reach many areas. The Internet is growing faster than the population, with the population change rate standing around 1.13%, and the Internet users are increasing at around 7%, with the user base expected to hit 4 billion in the next four years. Internet addiction is considered a disease in some parts of the world, including China where there are special treatment camps for Internet users. According to Tao Ran, Chinaââ¬â¢s first Internet addiction treatment clinicââ¬â¢s director, around 40% of ââ¬Ëpatientsââ¬â¢ suffer from hyperactivity due to the constant use of the Internet. In the year 1965, Mr. Donald Davies suggested a proposal of national data network which was based entirely on packet-switching. Althought his proposal of doing so wasnââ¬â¢t recognized nationally, Mr. Donald went on and made the Mark I packet-switched network in 1970. Mark I worked under real-life operational conditions and moreover fulfilled the needs of a multidisciplinary laboratory. In the later years, 1976 to be specific, the system became even more operational as around 75 terminal devices and 12 computers were connected, as the years progressed more were added until 1986 when it was replaced. ARPANET was the one it got replaced with and if we look at the history of the Internet weââ¬â¢d find that NPL and ARPANET were the first two networks that effectively and practically used packet switching. If we are to look at the history of the Internet, the French advanced just as quickly as the Americans did in packet switching. CYCLADES was the very first packet switching network which was designed and implemented by Louis Pouzin. It was seen in action in 1973, and was originally to be introduced to provide alternative options to the ARPANET design, which was still in its adolescence. CYCLADES was going to be a general system to support network research on a wider and a more multidirectional way. It was a complex and intricate system that was able to create a feedback system where the host was responsible for the data transfer. Before the introduction of CYCLADES, the network was responsible to do so, however due to CYCLADESââ¬â¢ end-to-end protocol system it was a better option to do so. Is Bigger Government Better Government, based from the arguments of Jim demint and Jeff Madrick - Research Paper Example Perhaps the most important of these are: making laws that are fair and just for all citizens, organizing and policing society, providing infrastructure such as healthcare, education, transport and financial systems, and representing the countryââ¬â¢s interests in the wider world. It must also, of course, provide for elections and engage in dialogue with the public over policies in order to ensure that it reflects in a broad sense the will of the majority of the people, and considers the interests of minorities and those who are not in agreement with the ruling faction. In each of these areas there are arguments for more or less government involvement, and consequently bigger or smaller investment in government offices and budgets to undertake these tasks. This paper will explore first the ideas of Jeff Madrick, who favors the big government approach and then the ideas of Jim DeMint, who is a supporter of the smaller government approach. Finally these opposing views will be compare d in order to establish which of the two is better. Jeff Madrick in his book The Case for Big Government argues that people in modern America cling to a myth about the early stages of American History. This myth suggests that in the days before modern cities arose and mass industrialization became the norm, people had less government, and were able to live as they want to. The age of the pioneers and settlers is one which people like to idealize, praising the virtues of self-reliance and freedom from an interfering state which only wants to create unnecessary rules. Madrick cites a letter which Jefferson wrote, saying that a good government must be a ââ¬Å"wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned.â⬠(Madrick, 2009, p. 33) The letter was written when Jefferson was not in charge , and Madrick points out that in practice, when he had responsibility for managing the expansion of the territory to include Louisiana, Jefferson did not follow through on this ideal view of government. He realized that land ownership of the vast new territories was the crucial factor which would determine the prosperity of individuals and organizations alike and he did not trust market forces to ensure that the new land would be distributed fairly: ââ¬Å"The broad distribution of land he thought ideal could be accomplished only through government control and regulation.â⬠(Madrick, 2009, p. 33) Throughout Americaââ¬â¢s history, from this time onwards, critical investments such as railroads, canals, and schools were supervised and regulated by state and local government officials. The benefits of this involvement can still be seen today: standardized gauges for the wagons, a transport network which serves both local and national needs and a fundamental and ever-increasing c ommitment to high quality education for all children and young people. Language teaching methods Language teaching methods The debate concerning language teaching methods has a long tradition. Although there is language teaching in all countries, many countries developed their own language pedagogy.Ã For many years English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers used the same language pedagogy everywhere namely Communicative Language Teaching. CLT is now the ruling, central paradigm in language teaching, which has shaped the thinking of the teachers. Teachers usually use CLT as a language teaching method; however, I think that this is not the only way to learn a language properly. First of all, the CLT method neglects the context in which the language teaching takes place. For example, there was a native speaker of English who travelled to Japan. He did not know anything about the culture and their language pedagogy, but he thought that CLT is the only way to teach a language, so it proved him that the other ways of teaching a language are failing (Bax, 2003). I disagree with him because I think if there is an emphasis laid on context, it leads the teachers to a more effective teaching. Secondly, teachers in the teacher trainings are taught to use methodology and to not to take into account what the context is. A teacher, who did a teacher training course, stated, The context of things was basically up to the teacher to try and apply the methodology to contexts (Bax, 2003, p. 282). It is stated, that methodology is only one factor of the successful language learning (Bax, 2003). If a teacher is taught and encouraged to use only the methodology, he or she reduces the chances of the learner in successful language learning. In my opinion, cultural specificity should not be neglected on the teacher training courses. To summarise, teachers should be taught to take context into account. Thirdly, some people say that methodology is essential to learning a language, but in my opinion the needs of the students are more important. Many people learn a language properly with other methods in those countries where teachers do not use CLT. There is the perfect example of the teacher who teaches in the Czech Republic, where not CLT is the used language pedagogy, and she did not understand how the students were able to learn to speak English quite well without it. However, on the other hand I have to assume that CLT is used world-wide, and it seems to be very successful. As Harmer (2003) points out, Methodology is fundamental to the learning of language classrooms where teachers are working (p. 24). It is true that teachers have to plan their classes, and they cannot only rely on the context in which the teaching takes place. I do not deny the importance of the CLT, but I think that other approaches may be more successful. In conclusion, I have to admit that not only CLT is the best solution when learning a language. Teachers have to take into consideration the context in which the language teaching takes place, and they cannot neglect the students needs and wishes. As I have mentioned, teachers do not really pay attention to the context because they were taught to use methodology. But it was true; there was a major problem with the world on that autumn morning in September 11th. ââ¬Å"The mighty have fallen,â⬠was heard elsewhere as this great nation of America felt itââ¬â¢s first real attack since December 7, 1945 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. As all of the nations of the world sat slacked jawed and paralyzed, the American media worked at a feverish pace to inform all what had just happened. à à à à à The media did a wonderful job portraying the events that took place during and after September 11th. Especially the newspapers, with the up to the minute news processing and gathering for up to the minute news. They even at times collaborated with other news sources so that they were able to be a main source for news. à à à à à Newspapers is the only news mass media that has been there for every major disaster that America has gone through. The Revolutionary war used newspapers for the most up-to-date information for those whose family was fighting far off; it was even used to inform the cities of what was happening with the current government. Then there was the Civil War, and not to mention the deaths of Presidents. Newspapers have covered from behind the lines during battles. They were even there for even the saddest of moments when great people have passed on such as President John F. Kennedy and Princess Diana. à à à à à Newspapers have covered lots of news over the years and have had a lot of readers. But is it because of these disasters that newspapers are still around? Has the tragedy of September 11th helped to improve Sunday newspaper readership? Sunday Newspaper Readership à à à à à According to ââ¬Å"Newspaper Association of Americaâ⬠there was a steady decline in Sunday readership before and continuing through the year 2000. Readers whether part time or full time newspaper readers were just not picking up their papers anymore. AT least 18% of all readers have started to read less or have decided not to pick up the paper all together. This continuous downfall has not just affected the occasional reader; it has affected every type from the hardcore to the infrequent reader. It is hard to reach the Sunday reader or even the potential reader to find out what they like to read in the newspaper since most of the time the reader is a one time a week reader or even an occasional reader.

Promoting cultural diversity in work with children and young people Essay
Culture can have many different meanings and the way the word is used has changed over time. Culture can cut across nationalities and religions. It is what gives groups of people in our society their identity. Culture also refers to the way groups live, for example ââ¬â travellers with, shared customs, thoughts, arts, language and social activity. Recognising and promoting cultural diversity of individuals and groups within the school will develop learning and encourage the knowledge and understanding of all pupils. It is important that schools celebrate the bilingual or multilingual skills of pupils. Schools will have a policy in place which states how to ensure inclusive practice, including the additional support for pupils who need to improve their English if it is not their first language. We have a child in our class (Year 2) who is learning 2 languages that are spoken in Venezuela, where his parents are from. He is learning Spanish and Warao. We have noticed that he is finding it difficult sometimes to comprehend instructions. As teaching staff we are understanding and sympathetic to his needs as we are aware he is learning about his culture which is extremely important to his parents and his upbringing. We repeat any instructions given and check he has understood them. Understanding and taking account of our pupilââ¬â¢s background and culture is essential for us to build effective relationships and provide support. The diverse cultures in our society should be recognised and reflected throughout the curriculum. For example, incorporating music, foods, stories and drama from a range of cultures will help to contribute to a prosperous curriculum. This demonstrates that we (as a school) are not only valuing the culture of groups but also supporting all pupils to explore and understand cultures which are different from their own. During International Week in school last year each class picked a country to explore and learn about. The children had to learn about the culture, language, foods, traditions and the flag of their chosen country. The class teacher also did the register in the language of the country and the children answered ââ¬Ëgood morningââ¬â¢ in the language also. At the end of the week we held a school assembly for each class to do a presentation of their work on their country and the interesting and cultural things they had found out.

The art of the period was filled with movement, light versus shadow, and the use of the whole surface. The composers incorporated new ideas into their music such as different major and minor scales, the use of the violin, a regular rhythm, a melody that was hard to sing to, terrace dynamics, the basso continuo, and instrumental music was now considered as good as vocal music. The baroque period was an important piece of history in the shaping of the music and art world. George Frideric Handel was a composer of amazing talents and abilities. Although in todays society he is not as well known as Bach, his work was kept in high regards by the people of the time. Both Handel and Bach were born in 1685 about a month apart, and together the world was stunned by the masterpieces created by these great minds. Handel, being born on February 23, in Halle, Germany, was not from a musical family. As a child he was introduced to the harpsichord by his aunt, and soon after he began to practice the art that he loved. His father showed no interest in Handels music and disowned him saying, " Then let him be a clown, a tightrope walker, a minstrel or a bear trainer!" On a business trip, Handel accompanied his father to the city of Weissenfels, where he happened to slip away into the town church, and began to play an improvised rendition of the postlude to the service. Down the centre is the book of Genesis incorporating the narrative of creative activity, the ruin of humanity and the narrative of Noah. ( Bible ) The following set of panels that runs down the centre of the chapel is the creative activity of Adam. After God had created the perfect universe this scene depicts him making the first adult male. The creative activity of Adam is a really popular piece within the set of frescos done in the Sistine chapel. Many thoughts have been put out about different things seen in the image. The image depicts God as an elderly adult male with an outstretched arm towards Adam. Adam is in a mirror place making as to accept the gift that God is showing, the gift of life. Some guesss are that the form behind God is that of the human encephalon that is anatomically right and that his clock was shaped like a womb with the green scarf being a newly cut umbilical cord. It is known that cherished to this work Michelangelo had done extended research on the human anatomy and was familiar with it. The 2nd panel shows the creative activity of Eve. This scene shows Noah and his household safe on land and shows another big figure of people seeking urgently to acquire to safety. Completing this series is Noah s inebriation. The narrative behind this scene is one time Noah and his household were safe they began to work the land. Noah so grew vines which can be seen in the piece. He so becomes rummy and exposes himself to his kids who so cover him with a cover. This trilogy shows that unlike the original creative activity, worlds are now far from flawlessness. ( Bible ) Traveling outward from the spinal column of the ceiling is the overleaping compartments. The compartments contain the ascendants of Christ. Get downing at the top right of Figure 1 and traveling in a counter clockwise way is: Josias, Ezekias, Asa, Jesse, Salmon, Roboam, Ozias, and Zorobabel. Finally, in the corners of the ceiling are word pictures of four scriptural narratives. The infinites in which these pieces were painted in were irregular shaped. With his superior artistic ability he was able to convey the narratives without any via media the dramatics as seen in David and Goliath. With the white collapsible shelter in the background he painted the shirt of David blue utilizing white contemplations to pull the oculus to David s arm on Goliaths caput giving a sense of action. Directly across from David and Goliath are Judith and Holofernes. In the foreground of this piece are two adult females who seem to stand out against the wall behind them in contrast to the dark gap to the r ight. In the white frock, Judith is shown in the act of puting a sheet over the caput of Holofernes which the other adult female had placed on a tray on top of her caput. Traveling down the image of figure 1 is the Brazen Serpent. This piece shows the Hebrewss after being plagued with toxicant serpents. Images of the dead to the right passages from dark to light and leads to the chief focal point of this image which is the snake on the staff. After they asked God what to make to salvage them they were told to manner this snake on the staff and when person was bitten to look at the staff and they would be healed. The concluding corner contained the Punishment of Haman. Haman s secret plan to hold all the Jews killed was revealed by his married woman and was hung.
